Problems related to the environment are many. Rapid exploitation of natural resources has lead to the depletion of forest recourses and animal wealth. This has had repercussions on the ecological balance.
Work Profile
With increase use of chemicals in the industry and agriculture the environment has become severely populated. Preservation of pollution of the air, land and water is the primary function of the environmentalist. They may have to carry out inspections of polluted sites. Appraise/ nature of damage reports and develop solutions
Environmental engineers deal with the clean up or redemption of man-made contamination of the environment. This includes oil spills, chemical spills, dumping of toxic and hazardous waste. They are involved with contaminated water, air and land. They may be responsible for finding ways and means to keep landfills environmentally safe and designing waste treatment systems.
A major responsibility of environmental engineers is to determine the exact nature of the problems.
Preferred Skills/Attitudes
All those who wish to work in the environmental engineering or conservation field must have a practical understanding of the physical sciences and a good aptitude for mathematics. The ability to communicate in writing and speaking to other professionals as well as the layman is a basic requirement. Competition to get into the top engineering colleges is keen as also for master's degree courses. So excellence in. physics, chemistry and mathematics is crucial. Interests in social, economic and environmental developments; ability to work as one of a team, to handle paper work as well as outdoor lire are traits for success.
Those who are keen to be in the field of environmental management would require an overall scientific understanding of the environmental sciences plus managerial skills to coordinate the work the various professionals and governmental/non-governmental organizations involved in the process.
Environmental Engineering/ Environmental Sciences
The bachelor's degree level is the first stage when you can start off with environmental sciences in a 3-ye~r B.SC.course/4-yr BE course in environmental engineering.
Environmental Engineering is a branch or engineering, which has grown out of the oldest branch civil engineering. It is, in fact, a specialty which civil engineering branch too. While initially, water treatment, supply of potable water, disposal of human excreta, design of septic tank sewerage system used to be the focus of environmental engineering. The field has widened considerably including now air pollution, nuclear pollution, oil pollution, noise pollution, chemical contamination among other areas.
Training to be an environment engineer would require either a basic degree in civil/chemical engineering along with a master's degree in environmental engineering or an environmental engineering degree now offered in some engineering colleges.
The other route could be through an Environmental Science degree followed by a ME/M.Tech. in Environmental Engineering. In fact, a post-graduation in the discipline would be the best bet. Doctoral studies would translate into scope for further advancement and better options, most definitely for research and teaching.
An Environmentalist would usually be a graduate in Environment Science or related discipline. There is sharing of many methods with other fields of science, geology, meteorology, marine geology, oceanography, the life sciences (botany, zoology. microbiology, biochemistry, biophysics} etc. making the field of study multi-disciplinary in scope

Prospects and Remuneration
How well paid are environment-related jobs is an often-asked question. Well-paid is a relative term. In the government and public sector departments/organizations, research institutions you are bound the salary scales prevailing at the time. The monetary compensation cannot be the sole criterion far choosing employment options. Private sector compensation would depend upon the productivity they expect. In a multinational global company with at least post-graduate qualifications you would be the best salary bracket.
Consultancy is the most lucrative field. No doubt about it. The best route to a consultancy would be to work in the field for a few years building tip exposure and experience. You would then be in a better position. A post-graduate degree is important for to keep your place secure and professional standing foolproof.
From the basic average starting of Rs. 7,500/- to Rs. 9,500/- with a first class graduate engineering degree, salaries would tend to be proportionate to the level of qualifications, the type employer, job responsibilities and size of the business/organizational activities. In the long run master’s doctoral degree would be better for consulting and teaching options.
